Our Open Garden in June was hosted by Michael who took Doug Tallamy’s advice to heart. As a birder he then realized that his property was contributing next to nothing to wildlife. Starting with one small plot in 2017, he expanded to multiple plots in the front, back, and side of his house. There’s still a significant amount of turf grass, which he has always maintained without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. It is a corner lot on a busy street so he gets lots of exposure and puts up signs to let passersby know what he is doing and why. He gave us lots of good advice (and got some, too). The paved courtyard is ringed by blooming, fragrant common milkweed.
